Parabens in personal care products act as preservatives and antimicrobials. Parabens are inexpensive synthetic preservatives and therefore more popular than more expensive plant-based ingredients. The most common types of parabens used in cosmetics are: Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Isopropylparaben, Methylparaben and Propylparaben.
